Sophos' UTM product is probably the best product for the home, as more powerful tools like Suricata require more technical knowledge and hands-on tinkering in order to administer properly. At home, there are a bunch of tools that can help, like Suricata (which can be installed on a pfSense router) which provides IDS, and Sophos UTM for Home, which of course is a UTM. So that means you need to secure your network in order to keep your computers (Macs or otherwise) safe.Īs armwt mentioned, in today's threat environment, you need to be analyzing your network to detect phishing attacks, backdoors, and other threats. Macs are just as susceptible to those as any other platform.
The vast majority of attacks these days are network based. Viruses haven't been an issue for over a decade, so "anti-virus" is a bit of a misnomer. I don't have experience administering corporate Macs, but I've had to use Malwarebytes to clean up relatives' Macs after they installed something like MacKeeper. THat's the thing though, you can't trust all your users to practice basic hygiene when it comes to downloading and using apps. Other than killing some of the performance on your Mac, introducing stability issues and a vector for malware to attack your machine, the only positive is likely to be a "corporate compliance" tick box. They are fairly decent and the latest changes in Catalina (inc more regular Gatekeeper checks and R/O file system and enhanced "rootless" mode) make decent as long as as you practise basic hygiene downloading and using apps. Apple have built in XProtect, MRT and Gatekeeper.
